As a lifelong creative, I'm wary of increasing reliance on AI for idea generation, and the consumption of AI-generated media (visual art, music, etc.) instead of human creations. However, I recognize the value AI has when it comes to grunt work and better explaining concepts to deepen understanding.

How I've Used AI to Make My Work More Efficient

Article Generation

For my first two projects in MEJO 187, I was tasked with creating multipage websites (the first prototyped on Figma, the second built with HTML & CSS). Having AI write the articles for these websites allowed me to focus on what truly mattered for these assignments, the UI & UX of the websites. Additionally, in the case of Project 2, AI was able to conduct research on the most beautiful beaches in the world, which also saved me time.

Finding the perfect font for your projects is critical, especially when you have a particular style you're trying to emulate. However, it can also be tedious to scroll through all of your options, even when using filters. AI has been able to help me identify fonts from screenshots, as well as suggest fonts that pair well with ones I've already decided to use.

For my final project in MEJO 182, I was tasked with selecting a magazine brand and designing a 3-spread layout for the feature article on Season 5 of Stranger Things. After I chose a magazine brand on my own (The Hollywood Reporter) and researched example spreads, I asked AI what fonts THR used (and gave it a screenshot for reference). Not only was it able to identify THR's fonts, it was able to give me the Adobe Font equivalents, since I was working in InDesign. This allowed me to create a magazine spread that would fit into The Hollywood Reporter, since the fonts were close matches. This is another way in which AI allowed me to focus on what truly mattered for my assignment by taking on a still-important task.

Education

"ChatGPTing it" is the new watching a YouTube video on how to do something. AI can meet you where you're at (i.e. you can ask it to explain concepts like you're 12 years old) and, unlike prerecorded tutorials, can answer your followup questions ("How exactly do you do XYZ step?" "Where would I find the button you're telling me to push?" "That didn't do what it was supposed to. What went wrong?" etc.) In MEJO 187, AI helped me relearn and solidify coding concepts I learned in class. Whether it was insight on how to go about doing what was asked of me, troubleshooting a feature, correcting code I had written, or helping me understand the reasoning behind why something works (or doesn't work), AI helped me deepen my understanding of HTML, CSS, & JavaScript which made the website you're viewing right now possible!
